The need for affiliation

By Karthik | March 25, 2008

Human beings are born dependent. In order for a baby to survive and thrive, it needs the constant support of other humans. Yet, as we grow, we do not gradually become independent of others; rather, we become interdependent. In the course of our lives we form many give-and-take relationships, building a healthy interdependence with family, community, and culture. Humans are so adept at this because we are biologically designed to live, play, grow, and work in groups. We are, at our cores, social creatures. Affiliation is the strength that allows us to join with others to create something stronger, more adaptive, and more creative than any individual: the group. (Bruce Duncan Perry, M.D., Ph.D)

Experiences teach us a lot of the people around us. We are social beasts, and without socializing, we are almost desperate to do anything just to be able to socialize, at least with someone. Through the wonders of the internet and technology, such affiliation take a whole new pace, which now makes everyone part of something. For the better, or worst.

But, what is this need for affiliation when people, in their true nature, are evil? Some idiotic psychologists have come up with theories that suggest we are evil by nature, and that we have the instinct to hurt someone and gain pleasure from it. Just like that, on a whim.

And then we go like, “what’s wrong with this world?”. When truly enough, we should look into the mirror every single time we say that, and instead of the world, we should replace it with “you” which means “me”.

What is there to truly trust? Relatives? Friends? Lover? Family? Kids?

The greater sin is not committed by the one who cheats, but rather being cheated or getting cheated is a greater sin than cheating itself. So he said.
