Keeping it short or long?

By Karthik | December 26, 2007

One of the biggest confusion that often goes unaddressed is whether to keep a post short, and simple or simply long.

Well, during my school time, my teachers often tell the class that the essays are meant to be written above the minimum word limit, but certainly, not way above the minimum word limit. I always debated that it was the teachers being lazy to mark long essays. Till today, I believe that must have been one of their main reasons. But back to blogging, when I was in the process of learning about blogging, I read about experts who insisted that we wrote long posts so that people would get the whole story.

Now, for those who disagree with those experts, let me share a little bit about the practicality of writing short posts. First of all, when you right short posts, you keep it simple and sweet. True.  But, are you sure you could get the message across to your audiences, or have you swallowed most of the thoughts and just posted what you ‘thought’ was necessary?

You see, when I was studying Business Communication, they emphasized on making sure your audience receive what is the true message of yours, without being long and winding. But, nevertheless, being long doesn’t hurt, just makesure you go through them a couple of times before finally posting it. This is because, the main reasons to why writing long posts could be harmful to your credibility is that, there might be more errors compared to shorter posts. But hey, in this business realm, what’s not taking a risk?

So, good luck on writing as long as you want, as long as you stick close to your cause. I wrote this because I have met people who are afraid of writing long posts, even though they have all it takes to write them. They were afraid of readers getting bored of reading what they have to share. And here’s my word for them, worrying about whether the audience get bored or not, is important, just apply that thought when you write a long post, and you would most definitely come up with a masterpiece!
